Student loans, like any other loans come with interest rates. The rate of interest on the student loan will vary from bank to bank and in most cases the government student loans offer a lower rate of interest than the private student loans. It is important to understand how the interest on the student loan is calculation so that you do not sign the papers without fully being aware of all the details.

Below are some types of interests that are levied on student loans. They have been explained in terms of what the repayment will mean to the loan seeker:

Fixed- The fixed interest loans are mostly offered by the federal government. These loans are extended to the student under a very low interest rate that remains fixed for the entire tenure of the loan. This means that if the interest amount is set at say 2% when the loan was given out, it will remain 2% right till the time the loan has been paid back. Needless to say, these interest rates are preferred by most loan takers since their interest rate remains constant right through the loan program.

Variable- In the case of the private student loans, the rate of interest is mostly variable. In these cases the interest rate will respond to the either the BBA LIBOR rate or even the Wall Street Journal Prime Rate. Apart from this rate of interest, the over head charges will also be levied. This means that those applicants who enjoy a good credit history will pay the lower rate of interest, while those with a poor credit history will end up being subject to a higher rate of interest. Do not fall prey to the advertisements of these private banks since they simply advertise their lowest interest rate and the reality may be quite different. Also since the rate of interest fluctuates and mostly rises as opposed to falling, it is important to keep this aspect in mind.

Free- Of course this does not mean that there will be no interest charged on the loan amount, but it does mean that the loan one needs to pay back to the bank will be interest free for the first few months. This gives time to the student to complete the course with ease and make smaller payments for the initial few months. The larger payments kick in only once the student has found a stable job, etc. Again these interest rates are very popular with people since they allow a certain comfort during the pay back.

Another thing that is important to understand when working out the interest rate of a student loan is that these rates are lower when the loan is taken by the student, while in case the parents are taking the loan, they will need to pay a much higher interest rate. Keep these interest rates in mind when you go out looking for a student loan and they will help you find one that is the lightest on your pocket and serves your purpose the best.

Moms looking to get back to work will mostly find that the good jobs require them to study further. This is not to say that there are no jobs that they can do without further study, but yes the better paying jobs are definitely for those who have academic excellence to show in their resume.

Let’s understand what role academic degrees play in the career path of a mom looking to go back to a job:

Better job options- The first and foremost advantage of academic degrees is better job options. Most mothers find that when they set foot on a career path after motherhood, they are stuck in a rut of a particular type of job. The income here is not too high and the jobs have little room for progress. After studying further new avenues open up. White collar jobs that have immense room for progress and are high paying jobs too, suddenly become available after earning academic degrees. So initially with a high school degree if your options were limited to a secretarial job, after a college degree you will be able to move up to others like financial management, bank jobs and much more.

Stronger hold on job- Not only is academic excellence known to allow you a better range of jobs but also helps in retaining them. The lessons learnt during the study are extremely beneficial and help to get a better hold on the tasks that the job demands. In most cases a financial expert will be able to manage a high pressure share market job much better than a person who barely finished schooling. There is no denying the fact that a degree does allow you to do your job better as opposed to someone who has not studied in that particular line. Indeed this also translates to better job satisfaction.

Faster progress – Once you are armed with a degree, chances of promotions are much better for you. This is the reason why hotel management graduates progress much faster as opposed to those who join a hotel without such a degree. Management students will also progress way beyond the executive level within a few years, while those who became executives right after high school find that their progress is much slower.

There is no denying the advantages of academic excellence. Of course this is not to say that practical knowledge does not hold any ground. But yes! When looking for a successful career it is important to pursue a serious line of study in that arena. As a mom when you are looking to get back to a career, it is best to pick on one that will have a long term value for you.

Pursuing higher studies so as to be able to perform better and rise rapidly in your job is any day a better option than picking a job that is low paying and dead end, even if it means that you need not study further for such a job.

ps

When considering going back to a job after motherhood, most women find that the better jobs require them to pursue some education in order to get back into the groove. Of course to pursue this education one needs funds and this is where the problem steps in.

When working purely for monetary needs, one finds that the better paying jobs require added study. To study further, one needs money. This gets to be quite a vicious circle. If you are a mom looking to break this vicious circle, below are some tips on how to find financial aid for study further –

Tip 1

College grants – There are many colleges that offer grants to single mothers wanting to study further. There are scholarships that can be pursued and if you are able to keep your grades high, you may be able to sail through the entire course with the advantage of a full scholarship. Contacting the financial aid department of the college will help to understand if you qualify for the grants and also how you can go about the process.

Tip 2

Federal grants- Federal grants are not too easy to come by, since they work purely on income levels of the applicant. However, if you are jobless and fall under the low income group, these grants can be very helpful. For this you will need to contact the federal grant organizations and register for the grant as instructed by them. These loans come with easy re-payment conditions and are highly recommended in case you do qualify for them.

Tip 3

Study loans – A lot of banks are happy to offer study loans to moms looking to study further and get back to a job. Here you will need to work with your bank and inquire about the various possible loans. Remember do not take a personal loan since the rate of interest is much higher in this case as opposed to a study loan.

Tip 4

Collateral loans- In case you own some property or jewelry pledge it as collateral in order to seek a loan that you can use to study further. Many private banks are willing to offer loans on such collaterals and one can also consider family and friends when seeking such loans. It will of course require an appraisal of the collateral before you set out to seek the loan. The re-payment mode is rather strict here and you can lose your collateral in case you do not pay up on time, so do keep this aspect in mind.

As a mother wanting to go return to a job you will mostly need to study further and update yourself. In case it is funds that is preventing you from going ahead to realize your dream, do not lose hope. There are many ways of funding your further studies courses. Simply do your homework well and find out about all the possible means of finding financial aid for your course. So get out there and make it happen for you.

There is no such a thing as a non-busy mom. Mothers are always busy and then if you are a mom who is going back to pursuing your education, things can get even more hectic for you.

Studying at home can be a very difficult task. One tends to put the books away very often fully convinced that one will get back to the books sometime later in the day. Sadly, more often than not that ‘later’ never comes along. For busy moms this scenario is a very common one. Unless you are armed with a good study plan, it will be difficult to get your course completed properly.

Fitting in the kids needs and a study plan for yourself into your already busy day can seem like mission impossible. But since moms are no less than Tom Cruise, they too can make the impossible happen. The tips below will help formulate a good study plan for mothers who already have their hands full.

Main Study time slots – The first step here is to understand your daily schedule. Identify the times when you are alone and can study. Mostly these are the afternoon time slots or at night after putting the kids to bed. For the main study, you will need larger time slots to fit in at least a chapter at one go. Anywhere between 45 min to an hour is a good slot. Remember, sitting down for longer periods is not necessary since in any case most of us will tire out our attention span in an hour or so.

Revision time slots- These require the shorter time gaps. Right from waiting for the bake to get ready to the time spent in the park with the kids, anything will work here. It will help to jot down short notes during the main study and keep them with you to revise later during these shorter slots. Here you may have no more than 15 minutes on your hand, but it will be enough to keep you in touch with the study.

Pre- exam time – Many courses will have an exams where you will be checked for your knowledge. This is the time when you will need to study harder and perform to your best ability. Shuffle you time table to put all things possible in second place, while giving priority to your studies. So apart from the absolutely necessary chores, pt concentrate on your studies. If needed, hire a baby sitter for these days so that you can put in extra time into exam preparation. In short, this is the time when you will have to give your studies that final boost so as to make it through with flying colors.

Busy moms have to improvise. There are times when you will need to juggle kids and study at the same go. Ask the kids to help in your projects. Organize play dates for kids where you get to have more free time on your hands.

ps

Mothers who want to go back to the job scene will more often than not find that their resume needs a bit of strengthening. In the break that the mom took to have the baby and raise her, times usually change. Since most employers are looking for a worker who is with the times, a degree or short course can give that much needed boost to your resume and have you back in action when it comes to the career arena.

However, not all moms will have the time to go off to a college to earn that degree. Study at home options work very well for these moms.

The internet today has made it possible for almost all courses to be pursued online. The advantages of online study are plenty and come as a blessing for mothers who would rather study at home.

Availability – The first and foremost advantage of online study is that seats are always available for students. Since the confines of a real time class room are not applicable to the online course, students need not worry about finding a place in the course. If you are eligible for the course, a seat is not a problem.

Authenticity – Online courses have today achieved a respectable status in the career field. Initially these courses were looked at with suspicion while the real time courses were given much more regard. Today most employers will be as happy with an online course as a real time one. This authenticity that online courses have established is a huge plus in their favor.

Convenient – Online courses are no doubt very convenient. In most real time study programs, the students need to get to the class room at a fixed time and as mother we all know that following a strict schedule with kids in the house is impossible. Online courses allow you to study at a time most suitable for you. No need to go rushing off to a classroom with the guilt of having left your kids in need of something.

Practical – Do not presume that online courses miss out the practical aspect of the teaching. Most courses today offer one on one time with the teacher. There are virtual rooms where students can get together and discuss their problems and ideas. In courses where workshops need to be held, they are organized from time to time. Online courses have retained all the good aspects of real time study and eliminated all the uselessly cumbersome ones.

Online courses are no doubt ideal for mothers who would rather stay home and study. They allow moms to care for the kids as well as get ready for their launch into the career field too. A simple search on the net will yield several results for the various online courses available to you. Do make an informed choice here and keep in mind that these courses are in no way easy. The study material and the examination process are as hard as a real time course.

Lawyers are in demand, be it the corporate arena, personal areas or even in transactions as simple as buying a house, lawyers are needed everywhere. If you become a good and experienced lawyer, you can have a successful and rewarding career.

Mothers considering going back to school will find that law school will offer them the opportunity to purse a career as a lawyer and the career is definitely very suitable to them.

However, law school is not your simple four week secretarial crash course, where mostly one is as good as the other. Right from selecting the law college to pursuing the internship, everything will affect the ultimate result and therefore you need to tread with caution.

Some pointers below will help you understand your law school options:

Admission cut off – When considering law school, your test scores will be taken into consideration. When making your choice it is imperative that you choose from the list of colleges whose cut offs you have qualified for, as opposed to choosing according to the location of the school.

Placement guidance – Law schools offer for the most part campus education. There are certain courses, which can be taken online, but the vast majority of classes are to be taken on campus. Most schools have placement programs, where companies in need of lawyers seek to recruit directly on the campus. The better the school, the better your chances of landing a good job.

Bar Exam – Simply going to law school will not make a lawyer out of you. You will need to pass the bar exam to be able to practice law. Take a look into the bar exam success rate of the law school. A school that has been faring well in this department will of course be a better choice as opposed to one where the success rate is lower.

Financial aid – Going to law school is by no means an inexpensive affair. You will need to secure finances. Some law schools offer scholarships, which is of great help in most cases. There are some law schools where you can actually work your way through the study by taking up part time jobs. Look into this option as well. Both options are good opportunities for single moms.

Faculty – Last, but by no means the least, is the faculty of the law school. Make sure you pick a law school that offers a strong faculty and one that is established in the industry. Not only does a strong faculty help in learning the tricks of the trade but also goes a long way in securing good jobs later.

Single mothers looking to make a career in law will most definitely need to invest with time, effort and money while going through law school. But there is light at the end of the tunnel since lawyers do have a rewarding job.

There comes a time in every mother’s life where she contemplates going back to a job. While some mothers will do so within a few months of their delivery, other may take longer. Some may act on this instinct, while others will pass it. However, it is a fact that every mother will think about going back to a job.

When thinking of returning to a job set up, more often than not, it helps to add some academic advantage to your resume. If the employer feels that you have refreshed your expertise by undergoing some study recently, chances of bagging the job are much higher.

While some moms may have the time and inclination to go back to a long term degree course, others would prefer a shorter term of study. Some fantastic short term courses are listed below for those mothers who would rather not go back to a lengthy degree program:

Secretary courses – A secretarial job is often one that fits a mothers timetable. Mostly the hours are well within the 9 to 5 slot and travel is hardly ever required. There is no need to bring work home and weekends are often off too. But this is not to say that anyone can walk in and become a secretary. There are certain job requirements that need special training. You should know short hand, be able to type, understand how the filing system works and so on and so forth. While most companies will train a secretary personally too, this training is only to customize to personal requirements. A mother who can show that she has undertaken a secretarial course will definitely have an advantage since the company will not need to start from scratch and she will be seen as an employee brining something new to the table. These courses are usually very short in length and range from anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months. Part time and full time options are both available.

Computer courses – There is hardly a job today where computer knowledge is not a requirement. In case you are a mom who is a computer novice, it will help undertake such a course and add to your resume. Depending on the type of course you do, you will be able to learn how to use basic documents like Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc and also take this learning to a higher level where the computer knowledge becomes more advanced.

Time management courses – These have become quite popular in the past few years. With everyone trying to fit in more into the day, time management skills are indeed required by most companies. These courses help to train students to understand the various time management tricks and implement them. Mothers can benefit from these courses in their personal schedule too and in the job scenario they are a huge plus. These courses are generally in the time span of 3 months to 6 months.

All of the courses mention above are short but they do pack in a potent punch into your resume.
